A Peek Inside All About the Pretty's Carry On

You can't beat the advice that the beautiful Julia Coney gives on her blog All About the Pretty. We got to know her well on our cruise last fall and count her as a good friend and great resource. Julia loves to travel as much as we do, most recently to places like Spain, the Caribbean, Mexico and Greece. We can't wait to see what this honorary JSG has in her carry on!
I just bought a brand new carry on because I needed something a little more stylish. This is the Stella McCartney for LeSportsac Carryall. It’s a big bag that holds all my essentials. It’s so fabulous that I’m thinking of buying the pull 22 inch carry-on.
In my carry-on I always travel with the following:
- Large cashmere blanket. I tried for years to use those small shawls that you wrap around your neck, but I'm always cold on a plane so I invested in a really nice thick cashmere blanket.
- Slippers. I take my shoes off as soon as everyone is seated in my row.
- iPod.
- Laptop.
- Cash (for wine on the plane). I'm not a great flyer, I need assistance.
- Makeup bag.
- Bottle of water.
- Travel wallet with itinerary, information, passport etc.
- Clutch purse.
- 3-4 magazines.

- The new Kindle 2 from Amazon - love that thing.
- Clear quart-size container containing all travel size products: Caudalie Beauty Elixir, Bobbi Vitamin Enriched Face Base, eye drops, contact solution, Jurlique Hand Cream, Sally Hansen Cuticle Moisturizer, Solar Cuticle Balm, toothbrush & toothpaste, EO Products hand Sanitizer Spray and Wipes, Murad Soothing Skin & Lip Therapy, Crème de la Mer Gel, Molton Brown Relaxed Traveler Pulse Point Balm, Clinique Super Balm, NARS Multiple stick. (I don’t ever wear makeup on a plane, I put it on before I land).

- Lunch and snacks. If I have a connecting flight I always pack a sandwich, olives, cheese (sliced), nuts, and good dark chocolate. I do not eat airline food.

On Our Radar: Mexico
Anne gave her case for heading to West Hollywood last week and now it's my turn to pitch Mexico. We'd like to do both, of course that's not really practical. Mexico may seem like an odd choice with the troubles they're having with violence; but the resort areas are safe and the hotels are offering great deals since tourism there is waning. Mostly, I need a hot spot to park myself for a few days with a good beach, fresh guacamole and margaritas. This winter has been particularly long and cold.

From the east coast, I'm looking at Cancun because it's a short and direct 3 1/2 hour flight. My go-to choice is the Ritz-Carlton Cancun (pictured above). It's close to the airport and offers everything I need for a few days in the sun including a luxurious spa, yoga (okay so we never get up in time for the sunrise yoga), and even classes and tequila tastings in their Culinary Center.

I'm also looking at the secluded Tides Riviera Maya which is a short drive from Cancun and just outside of Playa del Carmen. It sits on a quiet beach and stretches into the tropical rain forest. This one is definitely off the beaten path and away from the hoards in Cancun. Chances are you won't see crowds until you're back at customs on the way home. There are only 31 villas on the property, many of which must be honeymooners. I'd choose this for a Sex in the City style get-a-way with a few of my girlfriends.

Free Travel Guide

Back when we were a lowly editorial assistant, we used to joke that, "Free is our favorite color," meaning that we would take whatever swag came in, because we were so broke, we were grateful for anything. Now that we're older and wiser, we realize that many times you get what you pay for.
The free (until April 5) downloadable book, Travel Happy, Budget Low, falls somewhere in between. The info in it is pretty basic (Colorful suitcases are easier to spot on the baggage carousel; travel with a travel pillow), it's still pretty handy to have all this info in one place, especially if you haven't traveled overseas in a while. And hey, it's free! To download the travel guide, check out the Create Your World Website.

Our New Favorite Moisturizer

Last month JSG was treated to a facial with Aida Bicaj featuring Biologique Recherche products. Aida's facial was awarded "Best Lifting Facial" by the editors at New York Magazine, and with good reason. The facial uses electrical current to firm and lift facial muscles and increase circulation. Aida gave our skin a diagnosis that finally made sense: Our skin is oily on top and dry underneath. That could at long last explain how our breakouts and our fine lines coexist so happily.
Immediately post-facial our skin was noticeably plumper and glowing. Our only word of caution: We smelled like a brewery. There's a lot of yeast in the products, which definitely got in our hair. We couldn't wait to take a shower afterward.
Since the facial, we've use the Lait VIP O2; Lotion P5OV ( a toner that tingles just enough to let us know it's really working) Purifyig Face Cream and VIP O2 Oxygenating and Energizing Fluid. Our skin has never been softer, our flakiness and dryness are under control, as our our breakouts. It's also the first time we've ever looked forward to using a product line in the A.M. Usually we just swipe toner across our face and call it a day, but the Biologique Recherche products really prep our skin for the makeup to follow.
No wonder Elizabeth Berkley is a fan! Biologique Rechercher is available online.

Threading: Review of Sun Maita At-Home Threader Kit

First off: I've never tried salon threading. I'm not a very hairy person to start with--my bigger issue with my eyebrows is penciling them in everyday, not plucking them. Given that, I might be an unusual person to test out the new Sun Maita At Home Threader Kit, but I did and I have to say: I'm completely addicted. It has become my new SSB (Secret Single Behavior a la Charlotte staring at her pores in Sex and the City).
The kit comes with the threader doohickey, Feel Less lotion to numb the skin, chalk to make the hair more visible pre-threading and the Closer to sooth and cool skin. When you use the Feel Less lotion you don't feel a thing. Even without it, the pain is minimal.
After meeting the founders Anita Sun and Sara Maita, both licensed aestheticians last week, I decided to give this centuries old method of hair removal a try. On Sara's suggestion, I used it to remove the peach fuzz along my jaw line. The hair itself is very blond and never bothered me much, but as Sara pointed out, it's not the hair, it's the shadows it casts off. The threader was easy to use, didn't hurt and best of all, my skin wasn't irritated in the slightest, which is saying a lot for a fair-skinned girl like me. My foundation goes on so much smoother now.
Other benefits of threading include: reduced hair regrowth, it doesn't tug the skin like waxing would, lasts up to four weeks and prevent ingrown hairs.
Our only problem with it: Anita and Sara, both pros, say they can remove a single, targeted hair with the threader. We have yet to master that skill and until we do this baby's not going anywere near our brows.
Available for $150 at SunMaita.com.
