Donate Your Hair to Help the Gulf Coast

A few of our friends have posted on Facebook lately that you can donate your hair to help soak up the oil from the massive spill in the Gulf Coast. Regular JSG readers know that we are big supporters of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast area, so we investigated to find out if this is more than urban legend. Turns out, it's true!

We asked Sadah Saltzman, Stylist and Makeup Artist at Salon AKS in New York, who verifies,

"Hair naturally absorbs oil, which is why we shampoo our hair. So, hair is a perfect absorbent for petrolatum oil. And, when woven into mats, it  acts like a sponge, picking up access oil."

You don't need to majorly chop your hair, any size clippings will do--even dog hair works! The only restriction is the hair has to be clean so it can soak up the oil. Salon AKS is participating in the donation program.

Salon AKS Brushes

 

I discovered these great brushes when I had my Brazilian Blowout.  They're manufactured in France exclusively for Salon AKS, made of silk and designed for smooth and shiny blowouts. 

I tested the large and small round brushes at home.  The bristles really grab your hair, so much so that you need to use some extra pull to get them through.  The results are worth the effort, though, they left my hair much sleaker than my old, synthetic standby.  The brushes are available in the NYC salon and on line.

Loving Beyonce's New Hairstyle

Sultry songstress Beyonce Knowles loves to switch up her hairstyle. This time, she was spotted rocking a messy mane of center-parted voluminous waves. We still see deeper brunette locks peeking out from under a sunburst of lighter highlights gracing the top layers. We wonder how she got those bangs to grow out so perfectly, so quickly. The in-between stage of bangs when hair doesn't know whether to classify itself in the layers or bangs category can drive any even-keeled gal nuts. Perhaps it's the magic of faux-bangs.

My Night With Teddy Charles

So far, I've managed to resist bringing home expensive shampoos from the salon. I do however indulge in the pricier shampoos at the drugstore and had doubts about trying Sunsilk. The newest product
launched by the Sunsilk is co-created with Teddy Charles and inspired by runway styles and salon quality. Teddy Charles, who recently worked on the runway looks for Badgley Mischka and Rag and Bone among others and styles the tresses of celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker and Blake Lively, lent his expertise to create the new product line. That's Teddy above. The man is sexy enough he could sell ice to Eskimos!

I was given a special opportunity by Sunsilk to have my hair styled by Teddy and his team. After washing my hair in morning as usual, but this time using Sunsilk, Teddy's team styled it using only a blow drier, round brush and a flat iron, and Sunsilk Hydra TLC Styling Creme. The shampoo left my hair super clean and the cream like thick conditioner made my curly hair manageable. The overall results were amazing and the styling lasted more than 3 days!

Kate Winslet at the Oscars: Get the Look

Presenter Kate Winslet was beautiful at the Oscars Sunday night.  We love her old Hollywood glam hair styled by Frederic Fekkai's Renato Campora.  Here's how to get the look yourself:

Start by applying Fekkai Coiff Strong Hold Volume Mousse mixed with the Fekkai Coiff Perfector Anti-frizz Silkening Creme from roots to ends. He made a side part before he dried the hair. He dried the hair with  Fekkai Large Round Brush and pined it in place as it cooled down. Next, he used a one inch curling iron to create soft loose waves. He finished with Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray.

Product Review: No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner

I wasn't surprised that the No Frizz shampoo and conditioner worked so well at taming my tresses; but I was surprised with their leave-in conditioner.  Usually, I avoid leave-ins because they weigh my hair down and make my hair dull.  Neither is true of this new Living Proof product.  In fact, on a recent weekend my friend Shelly asked what  I was using on my hair and if I was trying a new deep conditioner.  She went on to say my ends looked perfect.  Needless to say, I didn't expect those comments either.

Brazilian Blowout vs. Keratin Treatment

Last May, I had a Keratin treatment which smooths out your curls and eliminates frizz by depositing Keratin on your hair. It did work well, though it took hours in the salon, my hair smelled terrible for days (think perm circa 1989) and cost a lot- between $250 and $400. On my recent trip to New York for fashion week, I visited the Salon AKS on Fifth Avenue where Zhen gave me a Brazilian Blowout. Here I am before with Zhen:

The Brazilian Blowout is less expensive than the Keratin treatment- starting at $150, takes less time (an hour and a half versus three hours), and doesn't use any formaldehyde or other carcinogenic ingredients. While I couldn't confirm what was in the Keratin treatment (I suspect formaldehyde), the fumes alone were enough to tell me it wasn't good.  The Brazilian Blowout had almost no smell at all and claims to have no carcinogens.  Lastly, I could wash my hair the following day with the Brazilian Blowout where I had to wait three long days with Keratin treatment.

Zhen started by washing my hair and then applying the solution (pictured below).  Then he dried my hair completely and straightened it with a flat iron, which seals in the product.  The next step was another cycle: this time washing, drying and finishing again with the flat iron.

You can see from the picture below (this time with Anne who had her hair blown out at AKS while I was there) that my hair is much smoother and thinner looking.  Rest assured it fluffed up after a couple of washings and is now smooth, shiny and straight.  Results are supposed to last upwards of three months, especially if I use gentle sulfate-free shampoo.

Hair and Makeup at Thuy

Along with a great collection, one of the most prominent beauty trends of the season, the red lip, was seen at Thuy. We got a chance to peek behind the backstage doors to get a sneak peek on the beauty and hair styles seen at the Thuy show. To create the red lip, the lead makeup artist for the show, Lottie, used Make Up Forever's Flash Color #1 and Flash Color #17 to stain the lips. An insider tip from Lottie is to blot the color with your fingertips to get the soft matte blended look seen on the runway. Finish the look off with Make Up Forever's Smoky Lash Mascara.

For the ethereal gold sheeny look on the eyes, Lottie used Make Up Forever's Star Powder #920 from lid till the brow bone. To achieve this look at home, she recommends to "pick your favorite shade, apply it lightly over the lid and layer Make Up Forever's Gold Star Powder over the entire lid and all the way up into the brows". As can be seen from the photo below, to nail the runway look, take the Star Powder past your brows, extending all the way to the temples.


Rodney Cutler created a voluminous straight look on the models' hair for the show. His inspiration came from a blend of the hard hair look of rock & roll and Thuy's collection which was soft and jewel toned. Cutler used Redken Guts to create volume and Cutler Volumizing spray on the roots for support. He showed me his own stylist's trick he used for the show to create hard volume at the roots while keeping the tips movable - just backcomb the roots with a soft bristled brush and flat iron the backcombed portion to lock in the volume.

Looks like it's time to break out the Manic Panic. The big beauty trend for hair at Fashion Week was bright, chunky streaks of color that brought to mind punk-inspired street style circa 1996. At the Cynthia Rowley Fall 2010 fashion show, Eva Scrivo for Wella Professionals custom colored hair extensions in shades of emerald, lapis, amethyst, navy and turquoise to replicate the rich jewel tones present in the collection. Each hair extension was completely saturated with professional salon haircolor and then woven into the hair and styled, creating an element of surprise and intrigue when models hit the runway.

Super stylist Ted Gibson for beauty.com went for a version of the trend that was a little easier to DIY at the Vena Cava Fall 2010 fashion show (shown below). He used Streekers to color hair extensions in shades of hot pink, purple and green, then pulled them back into the models' slightly mussed ponytails to give a "downtown, cool feel," to the otherwise equestrian look.

We think this is one trend that just might hit the trifecta of translating in all three worlds: runway, red carpet and real world. This is the second season funky color has been featured at Fashion Week (the girls at the Spring 2010 Proenza Schouler fashion show rocked lovely lilac streaks) and Lady Gaga recently caused a stir at the Grammys with her own spin on the Crayola color trend. Adding a bright streak of color to your coif is an easy way to add a hip edge to your regularly scheduled hairstyle without a huge commitment. Now all you really have to decide is which happy hue you want to adorn your hair with.

Review Sultra The Seductress Flat Iron

Stylist Guido Palau used the Sultra Sophisticate Dryer to create the casually sexy looks at the Alexander Wang show.

We recently had the chance to test out the Sultra Seductress Flat Iron. We love so many things about it--it heats up super quickly, has three settings for your hair type (fine, normal, or thick) and plates that move so your hair doesn't have that "I-just-straight-ironed-my-hair" look and it's sleek and black.

While we were at the event under a stylist's supervision, we had no trouble creating wave at the ends of our long hair. Since then, we've tried it at home and haven't quite gotten the same results, even though we know it's possible to get nice waves with the Sultra Secutress. We'll keep working on that part, but in the meantime, it does create a nice, soft end, so our hair doesn't look frayed at the bottom.

We also love the super-powered Sultra Midnight Travel Iron. We haven't tested this one ourselves, but we did get to hold and touch the 1000-watt iron. It's light, powerful and will no doubt pack well.

Get the Look: Jennifer Garner at the Valentine's Day Premiere

Frederic Fekkai Celebrity Stylist Adir Abergel was responsible for Jennifer Garner's soft tousled curls at the Valentine's Day premiere.  We love wavy, beachy hair and this do is just refined enough to wear to a big event.

Here's how to get the look yourself:

First, prep the hair by applying Fekkai Full Blown Volume Lifting Hairspray at the roots. Next blow dry the whole head with your hands to create texture and bring out the natural wave. Follow by taking a round brush and blow dry the bangs forward and to one side. Continue with a 1’’ curling iron, curling hair away from the face but leaving the ends alone. After curling the hair, mix Fekkai Coiff Océanique Tousled Wave Spray with Fekkai Coiff Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Crème and apply to the ends to create a tousled look. Finally, to hold the look for the entire evening, finish with the Fekkai Coiff Sheer Hold Hairspray all through the hair.

Review: Living Proof Full

Hope's such a big fan of the Living Proof No Frizz and the Shampoo. I was excited that Living Proof launched a product for me, the new Living Proof Full.

It's a cream that you apply to damp hair and unlike other volumizing products I've tried lately, it has extensive directions on the package and even more online. It recommends using a nickel size dollop for hair that is longer than the shoulders and that you apply to hair starting from just below the roots to the ends. I used a little bit more--my hair goes to the top of my bra hook in back and I'm admittedly from the school of "If a little is good, a lot is better."

While I was a little reluctant to try a cream--I'm used to mousses or sprays, I was really impressed with the results. My hair was full without being sticky and it was smoother, too. It was totally soft and had tons of volume. I did need to use hairspray to set my style as Living Proof Full doesn't have much hold.

Sofia Vergara's Hair at the Golden Globes

Sofia Vergara is hilarious on "Modern Family" which is our favorite new show this fall.   She was beautiful at last night's Golden Globes wearing a Carolina Herrara gown and a soft wavy hair style.

Oscar Blandi created her look by first priming Sofia's wet hair with Oscar Blandi Volumizing Spray then blowing it dry and pinning pieces around the crown of her head and the nape of her neck. Oscar used a medium barrel curling iron to create soft waves and finished the look with Oscar Blandi Lacca Hairspray.

Penelope Cruz at the Golden Globes

Oh, Penelope, you can do no wrong.  Even Joan couldn't find a flaw with you on Fashion Police-- voting you best dressed in your vintage Armani gown.

Penelope Cruz was the bright spot of Nine in a cast full of stars, just as she was on the red carpet.  Her smoky eye and neutral lip flattered her sun-kissed complexion.  And her hair:

Hairstylist Oribe gave her a classic Hollywood style: cascading, pinned back waves for a relaxed, elegant look.

 
Oribe used his Imperméable to shield Penelope’s hair from the day’s rain and humidity.

How To Get the Look:
1. Start by working Gel Serum through the hair and then use hot rollers or a curling iron to set the hair. Spray Imperméable or an anti-humidity spray on the hair before using the curling iron to help protect the style and prevent frizz.
2. Brush loose curls into place
3. Accentuate the wave in the front and make sure it is pronounced
4. Clip the hair in place and spray it with Superfine Hair Spray
5. To finish, use a bobby pin and pin the hair back on one side

Kate Gosselin's New Hair Extensions

Congrats to our friend and favorite celebrity stylist Ted Gibson for his gorgeous makeover of Kate Gosselin. If anyone deserves a new look, it's the recently divorced mom of eight. Kate says of her new 'do in the new issue of People:

"I'm starting over. It's good to have hair again. I never thought I'd have short hair for as long as I did. I feel like this is a fresh start, a fresh me, a fresh life."

The extensions reportedly took 20 hours to complete. We think they took years off her look and can't wait to pick up the new issue on Friday to see more of the photos!

Review: Redken Aerate 08

We've never met a volumizer we didn't like, so when the new Redken Aerate 08 landed on our doorstep, we ran straight to the shower to wash our hair and test it out. Redken describes the unique product as an aerated cream with cellulose to plump up hair.

The cream itself is superlight, the jar doesn't weigh more than an envelope, even when full. You can actually see air bubbles in the cream and when you scoop it out, it makes a fun popping sound a la Rice Krispies.

After blowing out our hair, it had MAJOR fullness that we've never achieved when styling on our own. The only downside, our hair was a little sticky as we used too much of the product. We've since refined the amount we use to about a quarter size dollop.

Our only other complaint about Aerate 08 is that the jar is short on directions, only saying to use on damp hair and blow dry. We apply it first to our roots, then work it through to the ends.

Our final verdict: Redken Aerate is a must have for any girl with fine, limp hair. It's a shortcut to serious fullness and volume.
